hi, sorry for being such a noob, but how do i put colours in my nickname? 
i assume it's something with those #FFFFFF codes, but whenever i try that i get a warning there is an illegal character

You probably get a warning cause your name is big and with the #FFFFFF Characters, It exceeds the character limit, sending you a message saying there are illegal characters.

| make sure u dont put any spaces in your name and you should be ok
