Aaaaw, wub you too.
Anyway, I downloaded fraps to finally find something out once and for all. Not happy. Not happy at all. I'm lucky if I get above 20FPS. This is on a computer that slightly exceeds Rockstar's 'recommended' requirements.
I'm going to start calling them Cockstar from now on.
Hey Adi, this dual core optimiser thing. Do you know when it's running or anything, like a system tray icon? I installed it, but I don't have anything showing up, and when I run the amd_dc_opt.exe nothing happens. No sign of it in the processes list in ctrl-alt-del either.

I managed to get a decent fps. Had to lower the resolution and draw distance though.
Benchmark gives me this now. It hardly ever drops below 25 fps in game now.

ey, this is mostly for ati card users, but ppl who have nvidia cards should try this too:
http://www.tweakforce.com/
i installed the XG catalyst 8.12 and got 2-3 more fps now i get smooth gameplay with these settings:
ress 1280x1024 (60 hz)
texture medium
render high
viewdistance 100
detail 100
shadows 0
traffix 1
before i used these drivers the game would start to stutter after about 1 hour of playing but now it didnt happen anymore..
so you should try these drivers too, hope it helps

When i play gta4 i normaly get around 20-30 fps at daytime, and under 20 fps at night (ingame).
The fps ingame doesnt get that much better when i lower my settings, nor does my benchmark-results either.
Some benchmarks from gta:
benchmark 1:
Statistics
Average FPS: 39.30
Duration: 37.17 sec
CPU Usage: 78%
System memory usage: 65%
Video memory usage: 91%
Graphics Settings
Video Mode: 1680 x 1050 (59 Hz)
Texture Quality: High
Render Quality: High
View Distance: 30
Detail Distance: 50
Hardware
Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition
Service Pack 3
Video Adapter: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 260
Video Driver version: 180.48
Audio Adapter: SB X-Fi Audio [9F00]
Intel Pentium III Xeon-prosessor
benchmark 2:
Statistics
Average FPS: 38.91
Duration: 37.11 sec
CPU Usage: 78%
System memory usage: 57%
Video memory usage: 60%
Graphics Settings
Video Mode: 1680 x 1050 (59 Hz)
Texture Quality: Medium
Render Quality: Highest
View Distance: 30
Detail Distance: 30
benchmark 3:
Statistics
Average FPS: 45.68
Duration: 37.10 sec
CPU Usage: 86%
System memory usage: 55%
Video memory usage: 47%
Graphics Settings
Video Mode: 800 x 600 (60 Hz)
Texture Quality: Medium
Render Quality: Medium
View Distance: 30
Detail Distance: 30
I have no clue why gta thinks i have a pentium III prosessor.
I really have a Intel Core Duo E8500 3.15GHz.

Hmm not much difference in FPS with what changes were made.
Just for the record, shadows and car density have quite a large impact on the CPU, so i read somewhere. Figures really.
Acid, my system specs are in my GTA4 benchmark up top ^
8600GT has 256MB

I did a benchmark... WTF is going on, why's the CPU usage so high?!
Statistics
Average FPS: 19.47
Duration: 37.30 sec
CPU Usage: 97%
System memory usage: 68%
Video memory usage: 88%
Graphics Settings
Video Mode: 1152 x 864 (75 Hz)
Texture Quality: Medium
Render Quality: Medium
View Distance: 44
Detail Distance: 28
Hardware
Microsoft® Windows Vista" Home Basic
Service Pack 1
Video Adapter: NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT
Video Driver version: 180.48
Audio Adapter: Speakers (High Definition Audio Device)
AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 5200+
I can't improve the FPS no matter what graphics settings I use, because for some reason it's completely murdering the CPU...
The benchmark video was pretty funny though, some guys in suits riding around on faggios shooting each other.

1st patch in the next few days, and that was yesterday, so should expect something pretty soon. The FPS prob seems common enough, i'm sure it'll be one of Rockstar's top priorities.

I doubt the fps problem will be easy to patch tbh. Sure, they will fix some errors and maybe there will be some optimization done, but it'd be surprised if a simple patch will magically gives us 10+ fps.

some helpful tips from what i know about render engines
if your graphics card has 512mb and above memory then you can leave all the textures on highest. textures dont really affect the GPU / CPU load that much.
the main culprit in this game is the smart ass AI, you know people smoking, talking to you, constantly adjusting so all pedestrians are different blah blah blah. also i read somewhere that there is an option to reduce the traffic density, which hogs the CPU, reduce that.
also try reducing the render quality, in most games the medium and high quality look exactly the same they just go through different algorithms.
and finally shadows... they are a bitch basically.
more when i actually get the game and find out how the engine works. sorry bit geeky

lol, its complety the other way around for me. I can turn up traffic density and rendering with literally zero effect on my fps.

Anyone feel like posting me a copy?
Then I'd be able to insert my oh so valuable input.
Seems to me that the consoles (or at least the 360) has nothing over most of your rigs, so I don't fully understand why it would run so much poorer on them.

new ati drivers gave about a 2%-3% in performance, not what i was hoping for. it seems to me that rockstar have forgotten something, they hung way too much on the cpu, the code is a bit of a mess as well. for example i have a sound card with all the onboard gear, but the game throws everything at the cpu instead
i am not exadgurating when i'm saying that i can play far cry 2 at max settings better than this on low/medium

This fkin sucks.
E8500 @ 4GHz / 4Gb / HD 4870 512MB
All games like Far Cry 2, Crysis Warhead, COD5, run perfectly on full resolutions and high settings.
But this. OMFG sometimes below 20fps on 1440*900 / low, low, viewdist 16, detaildist 20, cars 20, shadows 5.
Got to be good patch, i want to enjoy playing this, not to watch ugly shadows, no-AA lines, and other bullshit.

Wow...you managed to push your Q6600 to 3.2?
I should perhaps give that a shot as that extra 800mhz could come in rather handy...
Quite a popular cpu the Q6600 seems to be actually.
