You're not missing much, even people with the recommended spec are having trouble running it...I'm on lowest of low graphics at the moment to no avail, about 20fps and major stutters and freezes every few seconds..

To be honest i did think there was more to it than my processor - everything else, as far as minimum system specs go, i do ok with - 1GB RAM (XP), 8600GT 256MB.
I'm looking at roughly 10FPS out on the street, and that's if there is a street, most of the time i'm surrounded by blackness, graphics are failing to load at random, even if i wait 5 minuites, nothing. I expected with atleast everything set to minimum i'd be looking at about 40 FPS, but it's totally unplayable.

Quite so. I ran the ingame benchmark and after that it was ok for a while, until the stuttering got so fucking bad, it's back in the case on the shelf now until I either upgrade to SUPA specs, or Rockstar does something. 4GB of RAM, Dual Core @ 2.9GHz a pop, bearing in mind the minimum is Dual Core at 2.4GHz, and an 8800GTS 640MB..It's CPU holding me back, time for Quad Core..

System Requirements Lab gave me a near recommended system settings reading for Call of Duty 5, so i commandeered a copy from somewhere, i forget now... installed and unistalled it the same night cos it was unplayable. Lies i tell you, lies..
So... just ran a check on SRL for GTA4 and got a FAIL on the CPU.
Disapointing news but expected, i guess i'll just sit here a while and fondle the game until i figure out what to do next
Can't work Yoda's problems out tho, crazy that.

Nor can I, but something I did seems to of fixed it, played for 3 - 4 hours now with no problems whatsoever, just did an ingame benchmark again, twiddled a few graphic settings and ta-dah..Even got good graphics, none of this low low stuff..

I got mine playable after messing around with the settings. I actually set it up with the Nvidia control panel and just told it over-run application settings...
It does still slow down in the more cluttered bits of city, but I had some fun thrashing a rancher on an abandoned beach for a while.

also, can you post your system specs as well as tellingus how it runs on your machine. i think my pc should run it but its very boarder line
pentium D 3.2ghz (its dual core but not core2) and 2 7800 gtx's in sli (srl says FAIL!!) 2gB of ram, and a big raid0 array.
I think i'd like to try building a computer, with the new nehalem's they sound nice.
Can you get back on topic please.

I have an Athlon 64 X2 5200+ (2.6Ghz Dual Core), an 8800GT 512mb and 3gb RAM. I can get it playable.
The thing is, I can't run it anywhere near the quality of X360 graphics. Which I can on other games which are also on the X360...
My computer actually slightly exceeds the recommended specs that were released before the actual game...

This is ridiculous, once again. Both cores at 100% load at some points, but still, my GPU is at almost idle temperature after 3 hours of playing, 46 Degrees??

My cpu load is like 60-70 % but it doesn't run all that well either.
It seems like they put too much load on the cpu and forgot to use the gpu. The trouble with this is that a cpu is way slower than a gpu for certain processes, so as a result it runs slow, even on a quad core.
Hopefully they can fix this in a patch but i doubt it tbh. This is just one of the worst optimized games ever.

Did a bit of fiddling last night and got the naughty version of the game running without drunk cameras or sticky throttles (didn't do anything except set the compatibility mode of LaunchGTAIV.exe and GTAIV.exe to Windows 2000). The game now runs 'alright' on my setup but I'd prefer it to be not so bloody stuttery.

Mine runs perfectly now at the same resolution as windows and good mid range graphics settings. Even at mid range it looks bloody amazing.
Because of this, I decided to play some multiplayer last night. Just free mode, but it was fucking hilarious. 7 of us dicking about in heavy traffic smashing stuff up. We ended up having a demolition derby in the airport car park for a while, then somebody found a helicopter. He hovered it low while everybody else jumped over it in cars using those ramps in the airport. I tried to do it in a pickup and ended up smashing the rotors off the helicopter. lols.

What are your specs, what settings do you use and how many fps do you get?

well, the games runs really bad on my pc, and i just changed my processor, i have an dual core at 2.7 ghz now.. with everything on low i get good playable fps but it stutters from time to time; if i max out the settings the games runs like in slow motion... you can still play tho..
the game is great but its not optimised at all
still, an odd thing hapened to me: is it just me or the game runs flawlessly when niko is drunk? i had no stuttering and everything work pefectly; i went down a few times when i tried to turn niko fast but when i was driving or running the game worked flawlessly, no stuttering, great fps and all, it all came back tho after he woke up

Also if you could, take a look at your Resorce Usage with your current settings, and post that too.
Mine is set at 236, tho i'm using 219. Single player is just about playable at 20FPS, some stuttering and sometimes things take a while to appear on screen, but they do, eventually lol, it's shite really.

No I can't get this shit working. Installed Service Pack 3 and still get this "GTA IV FATAL ERROR: DD3D50" message. Any clues?
I have AMD Athlon(tm) 64 Processor 3200+, 2GB RAM and a Radeon x800/x850 series. You think if I get the game working can get the game playable?

Can anyone explain this crazy shit?!
System Requirements Lab for GTAIV - Ignore the failed CPU reading for a sec and look at the driver version for my card. Now i have the latest driver installed, fact, i installed it yesterday from Nvidia themselves.
Not only did i install the correct one correctly, first i removed the old one, booted Windows in safe mode, ran Driver Cleaner and Driver Sweeper (twice), rebooted comp, ran both progs again, then installed. Does anyone else who has the latest driver for their card get told to update by SRL? Maybe i'm missing something...

This game is rather strange in that it completely rapes your CPU but not your GPU. If I play it multiplayer it crashes after about half an hour because the CPU is stressed too much. I have a sidebar app which shows a graph of CPU and RAM usage, and just after GTA IV crashes, you can see the trace up at 100% for both cores...

Ok thanks for the answers anyways. I think it's fucking poor that they release a game who isn't finished with system requirements who's not true.

One thing that might help to make it run better is turning off the video recorder. (main menu --> game --> video recorder) I didn't verify the fps with fraps but it seemed to run smoother for the 5 minutes i played.

Yeah good tip, i also tweaked some settings in nVidia Control Panel and disabled internet connection and anti-virus and whet ever else i could do without, aiming to free up as much system ram as possible.
Also you can minimise the game and then quit RSC - 1 less process for the CPU to have to handle, if it makes a difference, but it all adds up.

from http://www.gtagaming.com
nVidia just released a new set of drivers and they are specifically aimed at GTA IV players. The success you'll have with this software is a bit hit and miss - some users are reporting vast performance increases while others say there is no change. Trying won't hurt, though. nVidia users can get the new drivers here.
A new ATi driver will be released on December 10th and should significantly improve performance for gamers with those cards. Also, another note from Rockstar Games states what we should expect from the coming patch: Patch Is On The Way We are working on making a patch available in the next few days. Since Grand Theft Auto IV is a Games For Windows – Live game the patch must be certified by Microsoft before release. The patch is already at Microsoft and we expect a speedy approval. The patch contains a variety of fixes including:
* A fix to the crash after legal screen that some German customers were reporting. * Numerous improvements to the video editor: Smarter naming of videos, improved rendering quality, better fx during replays * Fix to bowling while using certain sensitive mice * Fix for ATI 1900 shadows * Overall savings to memory * Graphic improvements to particle systems and mirrors * Multiplayer character settings are preserved * Support for DirectInput controllers. Note: The current hack way of supporting these controllers may not work with the improved functionality. So we recommend you remove the hack before upgrading to the patch

damn this game is weird.. i did some benchmarks today.. 6 runs, 3 on 1280x1024 and 3 on 800x600; other settings: texture on high, render on highest, distance 100, detail 100, traffic 1, shadows 0
here is the average fps:
1280x1024: 19.58
800x600: 19.44
lol, why would i play the game on a lower resolution? i think its GFX Card ftw here

I can't figure this fucking thing out.
My CPU keeps crapping out on this, it just can't handle it. It's ABOVE the fucking 'recommended' requirements.
I read the IGN interview with R* about the problems, one of the suggestions was to check the power settings on the CPU... Well... My entire computer's power settings are for PERFORMANCE, as in 100% power to everything.
The new drivers from Nvidia helped for a couple of days, then it started crapping out all the time again.
Here's waiting for the patch.
Oh, I also found out what my error is. SMPA50: Unrecoverable error, please restart game. THAT'S A WHOLE HEAP OF HELP, THANKS A LOT FUCKTARDS.

I don't understand this anymore either. One moment its running at an average fps of 32, then the other moment it averages 25 fps with drops to 15 fps. WTF
