personally i would try to stray over to the 64bit side Home Premium is a joke, dont even think it has the aero interface, its like a vegiterian steak - stay away
Professional is a very good choice, probably the one you should go
ultimate is exactly the same as professional only has liturally about 5 more features 3 of which are to do with security (bit locker or some weird stuff like that)
saying that the price difference between the two is around the £10 mark

I got ultimate, its pretty stable, only 32bit tho so it uses 3.25 or my 4gb ram.

seems to be unstable when running a home network and have a wireless comp with home, connection keeps failing from time to time, doesnt work to the full 300mbits starts at 190 and just sits at 54 for the rest of the time, much like vista, where as XP holds just fine and works at 270 all the time even downstairs. Professional works well with my network.
But if you are looking DL then just go for the full shebang

if you want more ram to use for games then you're speaking about 64bit over the 32bit, since 32bit systems only work with 3-3.5 gb of ram
also windows 7 is really good if you got hardware drivers for it also use this: http://www.tweakguides.com/TGTC.html pick the download version, the deluxe edition only has more pictures to illustrate how to do things

Windows 7 ftw, it's more beautiful than vista and faster than xp (at least on my pc) Everything is just so much easier with it...
I'd recommend getting professional, the xp-mode might come in handy for some games and applications...

For the record, how do you get around security updates, hotfixes ect with a non legitimate version of win7, or any OS?

Just turn the automatic updates off. It will nag you to death when updates become available, so you'll have to turn off the update notifications as well.

xp mode is definately not for games, you wont be able to run any decent 3d game on it..
also, about updates: whats wrong with letting it update? just dont let it download anything related to genuine and you wont get any complaints yet have the os up-to-date

I'm runnning a not so legal Windows 7 since a week prior to the official release date. I've had the auto-update on all this time and haven't had any issues with it.
It's still a relatively new OS so updating is pretty much a necessity i'm afraid.

I installed Win7 ultimate @ my internship lol Had absolutely NO problems with it, and I am really happy with it. IMO Microsoft was doing alot of bullshit lately, but this OS is just really good.
I'm running XP now, ofcourse.. But next time I reinstall my own pc, it will be Win7 since lot of people are it already.
Don't want teh ugly windows looks.

Currently running Windows7 Ultimate 64-bit. It runs smoother on my PC than XP, but then on the other hand.. Linux is the best

windows 7 is way more optimised, takes full advantage of multi-core cpus, manages your memory much better.. thats the most semnificative improvements, so if u have a decent computer win7 will run better than xp..
