|
|
hey dudes especially bagpuss and anyone who's tech savvy about such stuff...
basically my dad breeds pedigree cows and he wants a website. nothing too exiting, a few pics of some animals that will link to galleries of thoose "cow families" along with some info about said cows.
now i know i gotta buy some domain name like myfarm.com and find some sucker to host the website.
but what i dont know is: how to go about building a website and how to upload it to a server.
i know the obvious answer is to get some professional web designer to design it and take care of the rest, but i'd rather save the €€€€ and get some experience. its not time critial so i've potentially got a few months to put it together.
any advice on where to get started? as far as coding all i've ever done is a small bit of vb6
i'm really just looking to be pointed in the right direction here! cheers james
Can you get back on topic please.

Right, I am no expert as I am only a kid atm but I know the simple rules as I have made my fathers website and my own website which was just made to piss about and learn some new stuff.
>kwikukmortgages.com (Almost finished) (off GoDaddy Host - Payed Host - Payed Domain) >killerno99.com (off 110mb.com Host - Free Host - Payed Domain)
Anyways. If you are willing to 'Pay' for your host (you don't have to but is just safer and a little more securer) you can host via something like 'Godaddy.com' and you can get .com domains there for a fiver and get a host for around £40 for a fort year or so. (I haven't checked prices lately so just check on their site)
Or
You can get a free host which will require a little bit of searching aroung on Google (like 110mb which I use because it's easy and free and quicker to use) So if you decide on which one of those hosts you want, you can link your DNS to the host after the procedure.
After you choose, you can make a site of Macromedia 'Dreamweaver' which you can download and get a free trial with (I think it's 30 days) so you can play around with that, try typing, inport a picture save as HTML and get a feel of the program and uses of it and if you get stuck on the basics just ask as there is Bagpuss, Hitman and others to help.
Now if you know how to make the pages and you need to save all the files in 'The same folder and you can have subfolders like 'images' within that to put pictures in'. If you don't feel comfortable with a simple static site, try downloading 'templates' (Premium or Free) off the net and just edit the info to follow and require your own site and specs.
Once you have tested all pages offline on your PC and like them, you can upload to your host which is pretty simple as you just literally upload the files of your site as they are on your PC onto the server using a particular host and with godady, you just drag and drop the file and it uploads using a built in FTP but the free ones have to be done one folder at a time if you see what I mean.
If you don't understand the stuff (or crap) I typed there just ask where you are stuck and people will 'elp joo.
EDIT: Shizzle thats a lot

I've done a fair amount of web design, although Bagpuss is probably the most qualified person here
Right, before you even think about getting a host, make the site. No need in paying for a host when you arn't going to be using it.
The easiest method for you would be static HTML sites. I would never recommended a WYSIWYG Editor (Like Adobe Dreamweaver ~ Macromedia doesn't exist any more Killer...) as basic HTML is so insanely easy using them editors is just overly-complicated + you learn some HTML as a bonus
There is literally billions of HTML tutorials littered around the webernets. I think http://www.tizag.com/ is pretty damn good.
For a host, you'd be far better getting a host that gives you a domain name with hosting. There's tons. Use google .
Or you could just get someone to do it for you. I'm currently jobless and school-less. Sweet fuck all to do lol.

thanks dudes ok so what i'm gonna do is try out one or two "html editors" and see if i can get a handle on some basic html, i'll leave worrying about domains and web hosts untill i end up with some fairly basic type of site.
cheers!

Fantastic!
I use Notepad++. Open-source and colour-codes code so it's super-duper-mundo easier to read. And it shows you where tags open and close. And line numbering.

I think I do it the complicted way to you's. There is a program called 'Serif' (I don't use) but it's very straightforward to use as you just drag and drop anything onto a page and save as HTML. Much more straightforward that Dreamweaver but probabilly harder than Notepad++.
Give it a bash. I used it at school a few times and its pretty straight forward.

Skuse me what?
A WYSIWIG editor is easier than coding yourself...? Woah. Ok.

I thoroughly apologise for adding my point of view to a public topic.
>Coding is harder and a good challenge. >WYSIWYG is easier and you don't need to learn too much coding.
So I guess it's upto the person on which way he prefers?

For the majority of stuff I've done (not much for the last year or so!) I've used notepad for all of the html stuff and visual studio for the ASP.net stuff, which was mostly college stuff
