What error is he getting?
I had a similar problem where it wouldnt connect at all. I finally fixed it by upping the mtu size of my router. You might have to change it in the registry as well. I Found that solution by myself and now those m$ muppets added it to their troubleshooting guide acting like they came up with it all on their own

| he tries to sign in ingame and the connecting (?) screen just hangs there then it says failed to connect.. i'll tell him about this link tho cheers mate
