it's not exactly gray though, more of a brown kinda black
(this post is with the lighter background, the above is with the pure dark black)

This is hilarious 
It's all to do with your monitor settings. I didn't put a lot of care into testing the site on anything other than the screen I was using at the time, on which there was a clear definition between the black and the dark grey (which is #101010, fwiw). Newer screens seem to be set up for more 'blacker blacks', end up also making very dark greys appear black 
Edit: actually it seems that more sinister things are going on, checking the colours of Obelix's screenshot the dark grey really is coming out black. I don't think it's a Chrome thing - Chrome renders it ok on my computer, so maybe it's some gamma thing or something. I dunno (and frankly, don't care  ). But what I said above is still true, just perhaps not in this situation
