If i had the cash this is what i'd be going for, it's well under your price range. Bare in mind this article is a few months old though, Oct 07, but i don't think you'll have a prob getting hold of the parts, if anything you might find you're paying less for what's on the list + better specs.
http://www.yoyotech.co.uk/ Buying all the parts from one place means you'll save on postage too.

CPU and graphics card are the same as what I have currently. It runs pretty nicely aye. I have 4GB of RAM though.

4GB is pretty useless as about 1GB remains unused as many programs and Vista itself only needs 3GB.

i built a new, quite good pc to a friend of mine, for 505 euros, and it has:
AMD Athlon 64 X2 4800+ @ 2.8 GHz Corsair 2GB Kit of 1066MHz DDR2 Mem. Asus M2N-CM nv630a chip mobo / PCI_E Seagate Maxtor 500GB 7200rpm 16mb cache HD Samsung DVD-RW SATA Drive Antec Sonata Plus 550W ATX XFX GeForce 9600 GT 512 MB
And i think it is goood. on that 505 euro, no screen, kb, mouse, speakers or not even operating system
But i has one XP home OEM (dunno where i got it ) and 19" lcd and 2.1 speaker and mouse and keyboard. i goint to sell it to him 650 e, dunno if it is too low price...
