These days, I got some paranoia, that my pc could crash (again) and I could lose all my unique stuff inside. So, I'm thinking of some external-portable-storage-device. First, I thought of external HDs, but now, I read on wiki, that they arent good for storing memory, because of some shocks... strange...why they produce them then? Anyway, can you suggest me something? Right now, I (ab)use 70-75 GBs of 2 HDs. So, I guess, I should start with something that can carry 200GB? So, what you think? I wouldnt use it just for transfering data from a pc to a pc. I'd use it to store it for "in any case". So, probably, it would collect dust most of its time.

Short of an external HD, you don't really have any other options. None I know of anyway.

50 DVDs maybe?
22 DVD9s?
Shitload of USB flash drives?

Fuck knows.

Whatever you read is wrong. Use an external hard disk.

I DONT Suppose this would suit you but you could bear it in mind if you building a new machine
you could buy 2 similar hd's and a RAID controller if you new mobo dosnt have one
then if you set up in RAID 1, everything on the first hard drive is mirrored on the second.
[RAID 0 IS A DIFFERENT THING---DO NOT USE RAID 0 FOR INFO YOU DONT WANT TO LOOSE]

other that that, i havnt heard of any probs with external hd's,
bear in mind that they're not flash memory, so once you dont fling it around it should be fine.
i have a "caddy" which holds an old 40gb ide drive, drive is 6 yrs old, taken out of old pc, been in caddy for 3-4, no probs

Can you get back on topic please.

I got a 250gb external for xmas, i dont use it that much as a "backup". Like you say, drop it and thats all your most important data fucked. I just use the external to take around friends houses and copys 100's gb of films and pron onto.

However i also bought myself a 2nd internal 500gb drive, a barracuda with 32mb cache. Its great for storage and with its 32mb cache its good for doing the virtual ram. So im using all my ports on my Mobo, getting the best from my hardware, giving me more performance. And all my disks are quieter when my pc is under load too.

And if i need to move data around then the 250gb external isnt that slow either...i just worry about my 400watt psu lol

So 2 internal drives and an external seems like a great combo, and get a 16Gb pendrive just to show off with :P

Only problem with them are that if you drop it once, then you're chances of it working again may be slim. PenDrives are useless as they are easily misplaced and I have done that many times with mine along with others. So they both have down-sides... Plus the price.
is literally equivalent in price to that 500GB Portable HDD above.
